What makes great outdoor clothing on a construction site?

The UK typically sees a considerable amount of cold, wet, or snowy days throughout the year. While the exact number can vary depending on the specific location within the UK, according to current results it can be estimated that the UK has around 159 days of cold, wet, or snowy weather.

When selecting workwear for outdoor construction settings in the winter, it's essential to take into account various important features to guarantee safety, comfort, and practicality.

When selecting workwear for outdoor construction settings in the winter, it's essential to take into account various important features to guarantee safety, comfort, and practicality.

  • Waterproof and Windproof Fabrics: When selecting jackets and trousers, prioritise those made from waterproof and windproof materials. Fabrics like laminate polyester or treated nylon are excellent choices to keep you dry in rainy weather. Additionally, look for jacket zippers that are water-resistant or have a storm flap, which is a small piece of fabric that shields the zipper from water intrusion.

  • Insulation: To stay warm in chilly conditions, thermal clothing is key. Seek out options that feature synthetic insulation or down, providing warmth without adding too much bulk.

  • Breathability: While it's crucial to have waterproof workwear, breathability is equally important to avoid moisture accumulation from sweat. Fabrics designed with moisture-wicking capabilities help sweat escape, keeping you dry.

  • Layering Options: Opt for clothing that supports layering. Base layers can keep moisture away from your skin, mid-layers can add insulation, and outer layers can shield you from the elements.

  • High Visibility: In winter, visibility can be compromised due to adverse weather. Choose bright colours and reflective strips to enhance safety, especially on construction sites.

  • Adjustable Features: Choose jackets and trousers that come with adjustable cuffs, hoods, and hems to block out chilly air and moisture. Look for drawstrings and Velcro straps that help achieve a snug fit.

  • Reinforced Areas: Look for reinforced knees, elbows, and other high-wear spots to enhance durability, especially when working on rough surfaces or frequently kneeling.

  • Pockets and Storage: Having the correct amount of pockets and pocket sizes for your daily activities is crucial. Opt for jackets and trousers with utility pockets that are easy to access, even while wearing gloves. Internal, external, and hip pockets can offer safe, secure, and weatherproof storage for both work and personal items.

  • Comfort and Fit: Make sure the workwear clothing allows for complete freedom of movement. A good fit is vital to avoid restrictions while performing various tasks. Wearing clothes that don’t fit well can lead to discomfort and potential hazards.

  • Fleece-Lined Options: Fleece-lined or thermal garments provide added warmth and comfort in cold weather. For particularly cold conditions, consider coats with thumb holes to keep sleeves in place and enhance warmth, while also serving as a base layer for hand protection gear.

When you take these features into account, you can confidently choose workwear that not only shields you from rain, snow, and cold but also boosts your comfort and safety while working outdoors in the construction industry exposed to the elements.
