Under: PPE and WorkwearThe Winter Workwear Guide
Without winter-ready clothing, team well-being can take a hit and you’ll quickly see morale and productivity slump. Exposure to cold conditions can be extremely draining for workers, causing concentration to drop and accidents to rise.
The UK’s unpredictable weather patterns mean that layering is the best way to go. With different clothing layers at their disposal, employees can adapt to changes in conditions. Layering ensures workers stay warm enough, but don’t overheat during demanding physical tasks or if conditions change.
The Base Layer
In cold weather, a thermal underlayer keeps workers warm by wicking away sweat to minimise evaporative cooling. Thermal base layers can be worn on upper and lower parts of the body.

The Mid Layer
A light and comfortable mid layer provides additional insulation by trapping air in the pockets between its fibres. In warmer and drier conditions, the mid layer may provide sufficient protection.

The Outer Layer
Jackets and coats provide an outer layer of insulation and use wind and waterproof materials to protect against the elements. Look for quality fabrics which insulates from the cold while letting perspiration evaporate. Outer layers must be comfortable and flexible enough to allow good range of motion to carry out tasks safely.

Footwear
No one likes numb toes. Extremities are particularly susceptible to the cold. Use thermal socks and insulated footwear to keep feet warm. When reinforced safety boots are required, consider composite boots over steel toe caps which are more insulating.

Gloves
Cold hands are not only unpleasant, they can also pose a safety risk as employees lose feeling and dexterity whilst working. Choose thermal insulated gloves with waterproofing where required. Be wary that bulky gloves can be unsuitable for certain tasks and ensure additional protection where needed (such as cut or chemical resistance).

Headwear
Did you know that 40% of body heat can be lost through the head? Protection from the elements on this exposed part of the body is a must. A thermal or woollen hat can make all the difference.

High Visibility Workwear
With shorter daylight hours and murky weather conditions, high vis clothing is a must in the winter months to keep team mates safe and seen. Remember to keep high visibility gear clean to ensure the material stays reflective.

Remember that a good fit is vital. Ill-fitting workwear can impair movement and hamper safety. Organise sizing requirements carefully when planning and offer a wider range of sizing options to employees.
